Utah Homeowners: How to Choose the Right Projector for Your Home Theater System

So, you decided to build a home theater (ideally with Kelly Electronics). You've picked the room out, thought about seating, and maybe already started shopping for screens. But with the real heart of the whole system, the projector, the plethora of options can be overwhelming.

ou’re bombarded with rows of projectors, with prices stretching from $300 to $10,000. Spec sheets littered with performance metrics or differentiators, including terms like lumens, throw ratio, HDR, laser or lamp, 4K or 1080p, short throw or long throw. Hours of research can leave you more confused than when you began.
Whether you’re planning a dedicated theater room in your Cache Valley home or turning a basement in Providence or North Logan into your own cinema, here’s what you need to know to choose the right projector while avoiding the common mistakes that trip up most buyers.
Why a Projector Instead of a TV?
First off, let's answer the most common question: why not just get a big TV?
While it's true that TVs have become dramatically more affordable and powerful over the years, there is one area where projectors still dominate: size. TV advantages drop when you reach 100 inches or greater, running consumers roughly $1,000 to $10,000 for the most high-end larger screens.
Projectors also offer a fundamentally different viewing experience. Unlike a TV, the image isn’t shining light straight into your eyes, which many people find more comfortable for those long movie marathons. If you’ve ever sat in a real cinema and thought to yourself, this just feels different, that’s a big part of the reason.
As with any decision, there are trade-offs. Projectors need more controlled lighting, a bit more planning for installation, and occasional maintenance for bulb replacement/filter cleaning, all of which are often afterthoughts for a TV. Even so, for the right room, they’re hard to beat.
Step 1: Know Your Room First
The single biggest mistake home theater buyers make is choosing a projector before measuring their room. Every other decision flows from your space.
Measure your throw distance. This is the distance between the projector lens and the screen. Most standard projectors need 10–15 feet of throw distance to fill a 100-inch screen. If your room is a bit shallow in depth, a standard throw projector won't work. You'll need a short throw or ultra short throw model.
Short throw projectors can produce a large image from as close as 3–5 feet. Ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors sit right below the screen (some as close as 6 inches) and are ideal for rooms with limited depth. The catch is that USTs require precise placement and are sensitive to ambient light in ways that long-throw projectors aren't.
Assess your ambient light situation. Does your room get direct sunlight? Can you fully black out the windows? A basement theater with no windows typically makes for the ideal projector environment. A room with large south-facing windows is a more difficult (but not impossible) case. It is key to remain honest when evaluating the dark potential of your room.
Ceiling height and mounting options. Ceiling mount? Shelf? Atop a cabinet? Portable setup? There are many options for projector orientation and setup. While ceiling mounting gives the cleanest install and the most stable image, it requires running power and an HDMI cable through the ceiling. Step 2: Understand the Key Specifications.
Once you’ve got a handle on your room, you can actually make sense of the specs.
Brightness (Lumens)
Lumens measure how much light the projector produces. This is arguably the most important spec for actual picture quality, and it's the one manufacturers most often misrepresent.
As a general rule:
1,000–1,500 lumens — suitable only for fully darkened rooms with no ambient light
2,000–3,000 lumens — good for light-controlled rooms with curtains or blinds
3,000+ lumens — handles rooms with some ambient light; necessary for business presentations or multi-use spaces
If you’re setting up a dedicated, dark theater room, you don’t need to chase the highest lumen numbers. In fact, too much brightness in a dark space can actually be distracting. But if your home theater is also your family room and has windows, brightness quickly becomes one of the most important specs to look for.
One important caveat: manufacturers often list "peak" or "boost" brightness numbers that aren't achievable in normal viewing modes. Always look for ANSI lumens ratings from independent reviewers, not just the box spec.
Resolution
1080p (Full HD) remains the sweet spot for most home theater budgets. At typical viewing distances — say, 10–12 feet from a 100-inch screen — 1080p looks sharp and detailed. Content availability is excellent, and 1080p projectors cost significantly less than 4 K models.
4K (UHD) delivers noticeably more detail, especially on very large screens (120 inches or more) or at closer viewing distances. If you're building a serious, dedicated theater and plan to use it for years, 4K is worth the investment. Just make sure your content sources (streaming, Blu-ray player) can actually deliver a 4K signal.
A word of caution: many projectors marketed as "4K" use a technique called pixel shifting to approximate 4K from a lower-resolution chip. True native 4K projectors are more expensive. For most home installations, a high-quality 4K pixel-shifting projector is excellent, but it’s important to know what you're buying.
Contrast Ratio
Contrast ratio describes the difference between the deepest black and the brightest white that the projector can produce. A higher contrast allows the screen to pop, with richer colors, more cinematic shadows, and better detail in dark scenes.
Manufacturers love to inflate this spec, throwing out "dynamic contrast" numbers in the millions-to-one that don’t reflect what you’ll actually see. Focus on native contrast values from trusted reviewers, not just what’s printed on the box.
Throw Ratio
Throw ratio is the math behind how large an image your projector creates at a given distance. A throw ratio of 1.5:1 means the projector needs 1.5 feet of distance for every foot of screen width. Ultra-short-throw projectors typically fall in the 0.23:1 to 0.25:1 range.
It is essential to understand throw ratios, as they indicate whether a given model will fit in your room. This is non-negotiable to check before buying. Some websites include throw-distance calculators that can help if you only know the ratio, saving the effort of your own calculations. Otherwise, user manuals will also include calculations for multiple screen sizes, including how high your ceilings need to be and how deep your cabinet/table/mount must be from the wall or screen.
HDR Support
High Dynamic Range (HDR) allows projectors to display a wider range of brightness and color than standard video. Almost all modern projectors claim HDR support, but projector HDR is not the same as TV HDR. The good news is that a well-calibrated projector with good contrast can still produce a beautiful, film-like image from HDR content.
Step 3: Short Throw vs. Long Throw — A Decision That's Bigger Than It Looks
This is a choice that comes up in nearly every living room installation we do, and it deserves its own section because the trade-offs are real on each side.
Ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors sit on a cabinet or media console directly below the screen — usually 6–12 inches from the wall — and project upward at a very shallow angle. The appeal is obvious: clean setup, no ceiling mounting, no cable runs through the walls, and a "TV replacement" feel that looks natural in a living room. For clients who want a massive screen without the complexity of a full theater build, UST is genuinely compelling.
The limitations are equally real. UST projectors require precise placement, leave very little room for adjustment once installed, and are more sensitive to ambient light than long-throw models. A bright living room with no light control is a tough environment for most USTs.
Long-throw projectors — whether ceiling-mounted or placed on a rear shelf — offer greater flexibility in brightness, room placement, and image adjustability. The tradeoff is a more involved installation.
Our general approach: start with UST if the client wants a clean cabinet setup. If the room has moderate-to-high ambient light or placement is constrained, a long-throw model is usually the more reliable performer.
Step 4: Lamp vs. Laser
This is one of the most significant decisions in the mid-to-high end of the market, and it's increasingly easy to get right.
Lamp-based projectors use a traditional bulb that dims over time and eventually burns out, typically after 3,000–5,000 hours of use. Replacement bulbs cost $100–$300. Lamp projectors are generally less expensive upfront and have been the standard for decades.
Laser projectors use a solid-state light source that lasts 20,000+ hours — effectively the life of the projector. They turn on instantly, maintain consistent brightness, and require no bulb replacements. Laser projectors cost more upfront but often cost less over time when you factor in bulb replacements and the hassle of changing them.
For most new home theater builds, laser is the right choice if your budget allows. The technology has matured, prices have significantly fallen, and the extended durability is hard to argue with.
Step 5: Match the Projector to Your Screen
A projector without the right screen is like great speakers in a room with terrible acoustics. The screen matters more than most buyers realize.
Screen gain is the degree of reflectivity of a screen. A gain of 1.0 sends light evenly in all directions. Higher gains (1.5, 2.0) push more light toward the center viewing position, which can boost perceived brightness — but narrow the viewing angle and create hotspots. For dedicated theater rooms with centered seating, moderate gain (1.0–1.3) is ideal. For wider seating arrangements, stay near 1.0.
Screen material affects color accuracy and ambient light rejection. Standard white screens work well in dark rooms. Ambient light-rejecting (ALR) screens are engineered to reject ceiling and side light while maintaining contrast — a game-changer for rooms that can't be fully darkened, and essentially required if you're running a UST in a room with any natural light.
Screen size should be calibrated to your viewing distance. A general rule of thumb is to sit at a distance of 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen width. For a 100-inch (87-inch wide) screen, that puts ideal seating at roughly 11–18 feet.
A Real-World Example: When the Client Insists on UST in a Bright Room
We recently worked through a living room installation for a client who had significant ambient light in their space — large windows, south-facing — but was firm on wanting an ultra-short-throw projector on a media cabinet rather than a ceiling-mounted long-throw setup.
After evaluating several options, we landed on the Epson LS800. Here's the reasoning:
Most UST projectors in the $1,500–$2,000 range — including some very capable triple-laser models — top out around 1,900 to 2,400 ANSI lumens. In a light-controlled or darker room, that's plenty. In a bright living room with windows, it tends to wash out.
The LS800 is rated at 4,000 lumens, which puts it in a different category for ambient-light performance within the UST format. It's also a laser unit with a rated lifespan of 20,000 hours, so the long-term value is there. At our price point of $2,499 (vs. MSRP of $3,799), it made sense for this client's situation.
The tradeoffs are worth naming honestly: the LS800's native contrast isn't class-leading, and it doesn't support Dolby Vision. If this client had a dark, dedicated theater room, a more contrast-focused UST would have been the better pick. But in a bright room where the UST format was non-negotiable, raw brightness prevailed.
The physical placement also worked out. At a 120-inch screen size, the LS800 needs about 6.8 inches of clearance from the wall to the rear of the unit and sits about 20.2 inches deep from the wall — compact enough for their existing cabinet with proper cable management behind it.
Step 6: Don't Forget the Supporting Components
The projector is the centerpiece, but your home theater experience depends on everything working together.
Audio is arguably more important than picture quality for overall immersion. A 4K laser projector paired with mediocre speakers will feel less cinematic than a 1080p setup with excellent surround sound. Budgeting appropriately for audio is one of the most common mistakes we help clients recalibrate.
Source components — your streaming device, 4K Blu-ray player, or gaming console — need to match your projector's capabilities. If you're running a 4K projector off a device that only outputs 1080p, you're leaving performance on the table.
Cable management and installation make a dramatic difference in the finished theater's feel. Visible cable runs and tangled components undercut the experience. A professional installation plan, with cable routing through walls and ceilings from the start, resulting in a clean, finished look.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Buying on price alone. A $400 projector from a brand you've never heard of might look fine in a YouTube review shot in ideal conditions. In your actual room, with your lighting, on a proper screen, it will likely disappoint. Mid-range projectors from established brands (Epson, BenQ, Sony, XGIMI, NexiGo, Optoma, Hisense) have earned their reputations for a reason.
Ignoring how complex installation can be. Ceiling-mounting a projector, running cables through walls, calibrating the image, and hooking up a sound system aren’t quick weekend projects for most people. The physical setup affects picture quality just as much as the specs—keystone correction, lens shift, and screen alignment all need to be dialed in just right.
Underestimating your room. A projector that looks amazing in a dark, dedicated theater can look washed out in a space with a sliding glass door and no blackout curtains. Be honest with yourself about your room before you set your budget.
Assuming that UST works anywhere. Ultra-short-throw projectors are fantastic for the right setup, but they require precise placement, gain considerable advantage from ALR screens, and perform best in rooms where lighting can be managed. Don't let the clean aesthetic override practical requirements.
Forgetting about sound. I’ll say it again: audio is half the experience. Plan your audio budget right alongside your projector budget from the very beginning.
